Why harvest data on owners and property?
The goal of FARMing is to be recognizable in your chosen neighborhood of influence, be it residential or nonresidential.
Many new agents base their entire career solely on previous contacts (family members, friends, social acquaintances and the like). Of course, these agents often have very short careers since that pool of contacts grows slowly, if at all.
Thus, FARMing is a business undertaking, not a social project. It builds quickly by converting a set of neighborhoods into a vibrant collective of owners, branded to turn to the dedicated agent.

I had farmed a small community for a short while. The results were not good. I do a mailing as opposed to knocking on doors.

I have door knocked almost my entire career and it does really pay off.

Another agent in our office said to me one day, ” You would be a great door knocker”. So out I went in a neighborhood where we had a short sale listing. I spent quite a few afternoons, evenings, and weekends in there getting to know the residents. It was a great experience and we did get a fantastic listing from it. I found being out there was a great way to help me learn to speak to people about real estate, build greater confidence, and engage me in the business of selling my services as a Realtor. I actually met some very nice and interesting people. I have not done it for awhile, but plan on getting out there again soon. I highly reccomend it for anyone.
